I don't have any tools at home except for a few screwdrivers and hammers etc... I'd like to go out and buy at least the basics for minor repairs around the house also projects and hobbies. 1. 3/8 inch power drill and a good set of titanium coated drills (inexpensive). They will drill into most any home building material.
2. A set of screw driver bits to go with the drill.
3. A set of punches. (for starting holes in metal).
4. An assortment package of screws.
5. An assortment package of bolts and nuts.
6. A pair or set of channel lock pliers.
7. A set of vice locks. (usually 3 sizes in a pack and inexpensive at Walmart).

Home Depot has several combos they are marketing now as well as Lowe's and Sears (Craftsman).

I personally have five heavy duty pieces (Ryobi). Drill Press, Compound Saw, medium sized router and table, and a 71/2 inch power hand saw. I bought these a couple years ago for $99.00 each on the big pieces. The 3/8 inch drill was about $40.00.

I've been thinking about buying a set of power tools to use in carpentry applications (Im tired of borrowing my grandfathers). I'm in the process of remodeling my home and need a circular saw, a drill/screwgun and a recipricating saw. I saw the Milwaukee V28 set and it looks like just what I need. My grandfather who is a very experienced carpender tells me Milwaukee is a very good brand. Tell me what you think.....thank you.

Milwaukee V28 tool kit is very good (my brother has them-I use them) They are, however, not cheap - $600 (at Amazon.com) for drill, sawzall (recipricating saw) circular saw, drill and flash light. The V28 batteries are Lithium Ion, (the same type as laptops have) and last a long time, so unless you are doing a lot of work they probably will last all day. If you go with 18 volt nicad kit with the same tools in Milwaukee, it costs about $480, lithium Ion 18 volt $455. However, I have heard bad reviews of the 18 volt nicad Milwaukee batteries, although I have the 18 volt nicad drill, and haven't had any problem with the batteries.

Other brands: Dewalt. Dewalt makes a 36 volt lithium Ion kit, about $800 at Amazon, however, replacement batteries are expensive, $130 compared to $95 for Milwaukee V28. Bottem line: maybe Dewalt 36 volt price will go down, but for now, between the two of them I would go with Milwaukee.

Other brands to consider: Makita makes a 18 volt lithium ion kit, light, compact, powerfull, $520 at Amazon for drill, impact driver, flashlight and circular saw. a good buy. bosch makes an 18 volt nicad kit: $500 for drill, recipricating saw, circular saw and flashlight. Dewalt also makes an 18 volt nicad kit:$480 for same equipment as Bosch. All these are good buys, any of them would be fine.

Also, not recomended unless you are doing very little work Ryobi, $250-$350 for same equipment as Dewalt and Bosch, however, very low quality, frustating to use, and short life time. Good for low useage.

Overall, go with the more expensive brands, and stay away from Rigid. Rigid is about as exspensive as the good brands and not as good. Best bets: Milwaukee, Dewalt, Bosch, Makita.

How hard it is to build furniture without using power tools?

My friend wants to know. He's interested in trying this out as a hobby and now I'm curious. What types of tools would you need? How difficult would it be? Is it much different than building with power tools?

It's very difficult, but not impossible. He will need several saws (rip, cross cut, coping), a brace with bits, planes (block, jack, jointing, rabbeting), possibly a spoke shave, VERY sharp knives, chisels, etc. It's a great hobby though. I wish him well.

Do you have any gift ideas for a power tool or woodworking tool for my husband who already has many tools?

He has several types of big saws, and all the little power tools-drills, dremels (sp?), power sanders and the like. He is good at woodworking, but I don't think he has many woodworking type tools. Just an opinion; but as a male; especially one who enjoys tools; I have a suggestion.

To really make it a more personal experience, and one both of you can share in; why not determine an amount you can spend; and spend the time being with him in some store that sells tools; as he picks and chooses what he might most want.

The hammer drill gives the drill bit a pulsing vibration as the drill bit is pushed against what you are drilling. This kind of drill is only used when drilling into concrete and only uses special bits made specifically for hammer drills. If he didn't specifically ask for a hammer drill I would just get him a cordless drill. As far as Dewalt vs Milwaukee, the Dewalt is a better bang for your buck as the Milwaukee is expensive. If he is just using it around the house there is no need to spend the money for the more expensive drill. Hope this help and good luck.

Although my Hitachi drill's battery has totally failed me. I have tools of better & lesser quality that have not let me down.

For Hitachi type prices you may as well buy DeWalt, Milwaukee or Bosch. Or save a few dollars and buy Craftsman or Skill.

It really depends on what you define as expensive ? also don't get offended, but make sure you try them with battery installed, they tend to get pretty heavy for most women after a while, Dewalt, Porter Cable, Bosch, Milwaukee all sell a great 5 piece package pack that includes pretty much everything you need. Its about $450 - $650.. all great. Ryobi makes a decent set for your home, a lot less expensive and lighter in weight, i think you may like that brand..
The others are used by contractor (my power tools are porter cable, my drill weights over 6lbs just to give you an idea) all those are cordless too.
