Should I buy power tools from Big Lots?

Question:

I want to buy a plunge router from Big Lots but it's $30 and I wanted to know if anyone's had experience with their tools. It's made by Pro Source and I'm going to get a set for $89 that has a circular saw (5 3/8"), a jigsaw, a reciprocating saw, a light and a power drill. They are all cordless and it comes with two batteries. Is this a good deal too? Are these going to fall apart or are they good deals?

Answer:

Big Lots are stores that have clearance items from a lot of different stores. If it is a name brand and you get your monies worth why not? They are all the same, the store is different.

What is the power voltage on building sites for Power Tools in Canada?

Question:

I'm thinking of moving to Canada,im a carpenter and need to know if i should sell my power tools before i go? i'm living in the uk and on site here we use 110v on site... i also have 240v ..is there any way of converting them to suite ?

Answer:

120V./240V. single phase, should be available.
120V. is easy.
If your other tools are designed for 240V. with
a grounded leg, I'd be very carefull about trying
to apply them on the 240V. available, in Canada,
as both legs will be hot relative to ground.

Power tools?

Question:

I am sistering joist in my basement. i was thinking of buying a paslode cordless nailer but wasn't sure if i needed a finisher or a trimmer. My joist are douglas fir and I'm sistering them with 2x8 treated joist. which cordless nailer is the best nailer to use for that application. i want to buy paslode because of their reputation and i also want cordless. please help. finisher or trimmer ? angled or straight ? and the last question is it powerful enough to drive 16 gauge 2 1/4 inch nails through douglas fir ?

Answer:

I don't know if you have heard of a cordless impact drill driver, but I use one to do similar jobs as you have described. They can drive a 3 1/2 " screw with no problem into pine joists. They are also hand for drywall too, and relatively inexpensive. I bought a craftsman one in a kit and it performed well. They sell for around a 100 bucks or so. For more power check out a Dewalt but they are also more pricey. Just depends on how much you plan on using it.

Do the modern Amish, and Mennonites use power tools?

Question:

I always hear commercial's on the radio from stores that sell hand crafted furniture made my Amish, and Mennonite craftsman. Something makes me think they don't use power tools for building because i figure they do things strictly with their hands since their old fashioned.

Answer:

Some Amish sects use power tools, but for the most part no. The Swartz who build buggys have improvised their tools. ie: Turned a bicycle into a air powered paint sprayer. Made a treadle sewing machine into a band saw.
In Indiana there is a Amish sect that uses solar panels to charge the batteries on their buggys that power their headlights and taillights for night driving. They have running water in their community, it is graviety fed.
In Missouri there are Amish who milk cows for a living and have a cooler run by electricity for the cans of milk. Plus these Amish have a little building with a telephone inside for all the clan to use. Mennonites on the other hand do use power tools, drive cars, have tractors. Usually no television. Maybe they will have a radio. Their clothes can have prints, buttons and zippers, unlike the Amish who prefer the plain cloth.
Here is a tiny bit of history for you. The Mennonites came first. There were disagreements among them and they broke up as a group. One man, Jacob Amin tried to get the group back together, but instead wound up forming another church and the Mennonites dubbed them Amish. One of the quarrels was over the men's beards. Some felt the Bible said not to cut the beard and to wear it long, others thought it meant to keep the beard trimmed up and short. They couldn't agree on what to do, was it Biblical, traditional, or doctrine?

How do I lock drill bits on to my Bosch power tools?

Question:

Inherited a set of Bosch power tools from my dad, I can't seem to lock drill bits on to the tool. Any clues?

Answer:

If it's a regular drill they all have you covered, BUT if its a hammer drill then it may have a different kind of chuck. these are smaller, no teeth, and probably smooth and smaller than the normal chuck, the drill bit has a larger section about 1 to 1 1/2 inches long this section has three little pockets located in the sides of this swollen part. You just insert this into the chuck and pull the chuck back toward the body of the drill. the drill bit becomes locked in place to remove it just reverse the process. these drills usually have three kinds of functions, there is a switch on the side that changes the function. It will drill like a conventional drill, or the bit will move in and out in a hammering motion, or it will do both at the same time hence the name hammer drill. It is for drilling holes in masonry, You can even get a chisel for breaking up concrete.

Bosch makes a great tool line, too bad they are moving all their operation to China.......

What are some essential power tools to have when doing small and large wood crafts?

Question:

In the near future I want to start making wood crafts and sell them at craft shows just as a side job. It's something I've always been interested in and I want to get an idea on how much it would cost me to get it started by making a list of power tools and machinery I would need. I already have an idea of what I might need but maybe more experienced people can name something I haven't thought of.

Answer:

Depending on what you want to make I would suggest a good table saw, a drill press and either a small/med lathe and a 21 inch scroll saw would be a good start. You can always add tools depending on what you need later on Also a small band saw can be a great addition to a workshop.
I do a lot of woodworking as a hobby and so far I haven't found anything I couldn't make with those few tools. My shop area isn't huge just the back corner of my garage really but I've produced some really neat thing in there.

What are the basic power tools every homeowner should own?

Question:

I don't have any tools at home except for a few screwdrivers and hammers etc... I'd like to go out and buy at least the basics for minor repairs around the house also projects and hobbies. What brands are best? Can I get a kit or combo of power tools for a good price? Any help would be appreciated. Thank you!!

Answer:

1. 3/8 inch power drill and a good set of titanium coated drills (inexpensive). They will drill into most any home building material.
2. A set of screw driver bits to go with the drill.
3. A set of punches. (for starting holes in metal).
4. An assortment package of screws.
5. An assortment package of bolts and nuts.
6. A pair or set of channel lock pliers.
7. A set of vice locks. (usually 3 sizes in a pack and inexpensive at Walmart).

Home Depot has several combos they are marketing now as well as Lowe's and Sears (Craftsman).

I personally have five heavy duty pieces (Ryobi). Drill Press, Compound Saw, medium sized router and table, and a 71/2 inch power hand saw. I bought these a couple years ago for $99.00 each on the big pieces. The 3/8 inch drill was about $40.00.

What is the best brand of cordless power tools?

Question:

I've been thinking about buying a set of power tools to use in carpentry applications (Im tired of borrowing my grandfathers). I'm in the process of remodeling my home and need a circular saw, a drill/screwgun and a recipricating saw. I saw the Milwaukee V28 set and it looks like just what I need. My grandfather who is a very experienced carpender tells me Milwaukee is a very good brand. Tell me what you think.....thank you.

Answer:

Milwaukee V28 tool kit is very good (my brother has them-I use them) They are, however, not cheap - $600 (at Amazon.com) for drill, sawzall (recipricating saw) circular saw, drill and flash light. The V28 batteries are Lithium Ion, (the same type as laptops have) and last a long time, so unless you are doing a lot of work they probably will last all day. If you go with 18 volt nicad kit with the same tools in Milwaukee, it costs about $480, lithium Ion 18 volt $455. However, I have heard bad reviews of the 18 volt nicad Milwaukee batteries, although I have the 18 volt nicad drill, and haven't had any problem with the batteries.

Other brands: Dewalt. Dewalt makes a 36 volt lithium Ion kit, about $800 at Amazon, however, replacement batteries are expensive, $130 compared to $95 for Milwaukee V28. Bottem line: maybe Dewalt 36 volt price will go down, but for now, between the two of them I would go with Milwaukee.

Other brands to consider: Makita makes a 18 volt lithium ion kit, light, compact, powerfull, $520 at Amazon for drill, impact driver, flashlight and circular saw. a good buy. bosch makes an 18 volt nicad kit: $500 for drill, recipricating saw, circular saw and flashlight. Dewalt also makes an 18 volt nicad kit:$480 for same equipment as Bosch. All these are good buys, any of them would be fine.

Also, not recomended unless you are doing very little work Ryobi, $250-$350 for same equipment as Dewalt and Bosch, however, very low quality, frustating to use, and short life time. Good for low useage.

Overall, go with the more expensive brands, and stay away from Rigid. Rigid is about as exspensive as the good brands and not as good. Best bets: Milwaukee, Dewalt, Bosch, Makita.

I hope that this helps you!

How hard it is to build furniture without using power tools?

Question:

My friend wants to know. He's interested in trying this out as a hobby and now I'm curious. What types of tools would you need? How difficult would it be? Is it much different than building with power tools?

Answer:

It's very difficult, but not impossible. He will need several saws (rip, cross cut, coping), a brace with bits, planes (block, jack, jointing, rabbeting), possibly a spoke shave, VERY sharp knives, chisels, etc. It's a great hobby though. I wish him well.

Do you have any gift ideas for a power tool or woodworking tool for my husband who already has many tools?

Question:

He has several types of big saws, and all the little power tools-drills, dremels (sp?), power sanders and the like. He is good at woodworking, but I don't think he has many woodworking type tools. Any guy or girl out there who enjoys working with tools, what tools are you glad you own, or what tools are on your wish list??

Answer:

Just an opinion; but as a male; especially one who enjoys tools; I have a suggestion.

To really make it a more personal experience, and one both of you can share in; why not determine an amount you can spend; and spend the time being with him in some store that sells tools; as he picks and chooses what he might most want.

Go out to lunch after, and enjoy sharing the time, and the smile on his face as he thanks you and hugs the tool (LOL) teasing.

What is the difference in perormance and run time between the DC730KA and the 14.4 V XRP drill driver?

Question:

What is the difference in perormance and run time between the DC730KA and the 14.4 V XRP drill driver?

Answer:

DeWalt Staff:
We do not have a run time for our products as there are too many variables to determine this, however the DC730KA comes with a 1.7 amp hour battery while the XRP battery is a 2.4 amp hour battery so you will get a longer run time per charge with the XRP battery.

Whats the difference between a cordless drill and a cordless hammer drill?

Question:

I want to buy my husband a cordless drill. I've been looking at the Dewalt brand and they have a cordless drill and a cordless hammer drill. Well I found out he wants to switch to Milwaukee and i've been looking around and all I see for that brand is a hammer drill. So whats the difference?

Answer:

The hammer drill gives the drill bit a pulsing vibration as the drill bit is pushed against what you are drilling. This kind of drill is only used when drilling into concrete and only uses special bits made specifically for hammer drills. If he didn't specifically ask for a hammer drill I would just get him a cordless drill. As far as Dewalt vs Milwaukee, the Dewalt is a better bang for your buck as the Milwaukee is expensive. If he is just using it around the house there is no need to spend the money for the more expensive drill. Hope this help and good luck.

What power tools do you recommend?

Question:

I'm new at buying tools and I usually borrow but now I'd like to buy my own. I really love carpentry and I plan to do quite a bit of projects once I have power tools. I'd like to start out by buying a circular saw and a drill. what brands and types do you recommend that are not to expensive, will do a good job, and will last a pretty long time? and if you can, which brands and types should I stay away from?

Answer:

It really depends on what you define as expensive ? also don't get offended, but make sure you try them with battery installed, they tend to get pretty heavy for most women after a while, Dewalt, Porter Cable, Bosch, Milwaukee all sell a great 5 piece package pack that includes pretty much everything you need. Its about $450 - $650.. all great. Ryobi makes a decent set for your home, a lot less expensive and lighter in weight, i think you may like that brand..
The others are used by contractor (my power tools are porter cable, my drill weights over 6lbs just to give you an idea) all those are cordless too.
